Touched by Wendy Baker and the many teachers, mothers, aunts and friends they’ve known with breast cancer, Dr. Minerva Perez, her son Sebastian Perez and “Wendy’s Warriors” at Everett Alvarez High School’s Interact Club have raised awareness for breast cancer and funds for the Wendy Baker RN Memorial Fund at Natividad Foundation every October during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Wendy Baker served the community as a registered nurse for 30 years, both at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital and Natividad, where she met her husband of 27 years, Dr. James Lew.  After losing her battle with breast cancer in 2015, The Wendy Baker RN Memorial Fund was founded in her honor.

Wendy’s Warriors

“We’re honoring Wendy, and we’re fighting the fight,” said Jodie Kaminiskis, the teacher adviser to the student-led Interact Club.

The students raised breast cancer awareness through class presentations at Everett Alvarez High School, Salinas Rotaries and the Hope football game and the Pink water polo and volleyball game at the school.

In 2019, students presented a check for $19,000 to the Wendy Baker RN Memorial Fund. The club has raised more than $75,000 for the fund in five years.

Sebastian Perez, along with sister Anastasia, friend Tyler Robertson, and mom Dr. Minerva Perez (past Chair of Natividad Foundation, Family Medicine Physician, Natividad Medical Group) have raised $6,000 for the Wendy Baker RN Memorial Fund since 2015. Sebastian, now 17, is an active member of our community and coordinates the annual fundraising bake sale.
